Staples’ Coach of the Week Program Gears Up For a Fifth Season
Each Week During the NFL Regular Season One Lucky School Will Win $5,000 in School Supplies Plus an NFL Head Coach Visit

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – July 24, 2000 – Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) announced that the 5th annual "Staples Coach of the Week" program began today. Sponsored by Staples in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and CBS, the contest will award seventeen accredited K-12 schools a $5,000 Staples gift certificate and a visit from their local NFL head coach.

For seventeen weeks during the NFL regular season a panel of NFL representatives will choose one head coach each week whose leadership proves exemplary and merits the honor to be named "Staples Coach of the Week.” One random entry submitted on behalf of a school in the winning coach’s region will be drawn, and one lucky school will be the recipient of the prize. Both the coach and the school will be announced the following Sunday during THE NFL TODAY pre-game show at noon on CBS.

While shopping for back-to-school supplies, students and parents can pick up an entry form at any Staples superstore or enter online at Entries must be postmarked before December 25, 2000.

“Participating in Staples Coach of the Week was a great experience for the students and teachers of Indian Creek Middle School,” said Mike Wilcox, assistant principal of a 1999 winning school. “Students enjoyed the visit from Jim Mora, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, while teachers appreciated the year’s supply of products they requested. It is truly a program that benefits everyone.”

Now in its fifth season, the "Staples Coach of the Week" program has awarded almost $300,000 in school supplies to 58 schools throughout the country. In addition to the $5,000 gift certificate from Staples and the visit from the local NFL coach, the student, parent, staff, or faculty member who submits the winning entry receives special recognition during the coach's visit, as well as a Staples gift certificate for personal use.

How Schools Can Enter the "Staples Coach of the Week" Contest:
Entries may be submitted as a class project or by individuals on behalf of a school. There are three easy ways to enter your school in the "Staples Coach of the Week" program: 1) Log on to and fill out an entry form on-line; 2) Visit a participating Staples store (between July 24 and December 23, 2000), to pick up an official entry form and mail in; or 3) Send a postcard with your name, age, daytime phone number, name and address of the school, your relationship to the school, and the name of your local NFL team to - Staples Coach of the Week, P.O. Box 66140, Washington, DC, 20035. Participating schools may collect entries from students and mail them together in one package. Eligible entries must be postmarked by Dec. 23, 2000. Winning schools are selected at random by an independent judging organization.
