|Staples NFL Coach of the Year Balloting Begins; Fans Cast Votes For Favorite Head Coach at www.nfl.com|
|WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 1998--Staples and
the National Football League have launched fan balloting for this
year's "Coach of the Year" award. From now until December 31, 1998
football fans can cast their vote for their favorite head coach simply
by logging onto www.nfl.com. This is the first year that Staples has
partnered with the NFL for the "Coach of the Year" award.
The winning head coach will be presented with the "Staples NFL Coach of the Year" award on Super Bowl media day, January 26, 1999, at South Florida's Pro Player stadium during the week leading up to Super Bowl XXXIII. Staples' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Thomas G. Stemberg will present the award. In addition, $25,000 will be presented to a selected charity on behalf of the coach, Staples and the NFL.
"This award celebrates a coach's commitment to excellence in inspiring his players as recognized by the fans who follow his team. There is no greater honor," Stemberg said.
"NFL fans have done a good job in selecting the league's top coach for the past 3 years," said NFL President Neil Austrian. "This year, with so many teams having excellent seasons, fans have a tough challenge in front of them."
Past winners of the "Coach of the Year" award include Tony Dungy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1997), Mike Holmgren of the Green Bay Packers (1996), and Ray Rhodes of the Philadelphia Eagles (1995).
The "Staples NFL Coach of the Year" award compliments Staples' commitment to the "Coach of the Week" program that honors a coach each week for an outstanding game during the regular season. In conjunction with this recognition, a local school in that coach's region is randomly drawn from entries to receive a $5,000 Staples gift certificate. The winning coach also visits the school to celebrate the prize. Now in its third year, more than $200,000 in school supplies has been donated to schools nationwide through the "Coach of the Week" program.
