Staples Names Ronald L. Sargent President and Chief Operating Officer
WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 1998--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS), the largest operator of office superstores in the world, today announced that Ronald L. Sargent has been named president and chief operating officer.

Sargent, 43, who joined Staples ten years ago, was president, North American Operations, and was responsible for Staples' U.S. and Canadian superstores, Staples Contract, Staples Direct, Quill Corp., supply chain management and the company's marketing activities. In his new role, he will continue to manage those areas in addition to the company's European business as Staples introduces Quill and revitalizes Staples Direct there.

Prior to being named as president, North American operations, Sargent served as president, Staples Contract and Commercial. He joined Staples in 1989 as regional vice president of operations. Sargent served 15 years with The Kroger Co. where he gained extensive experience in retail operations, strategic planning, sales and human resources.

He was educated at Harvard College and Harvard Business School.

Sargent announced the following appointments:

Joseph G. Doody, 46, as president, Staples Contract and Commerical. Doody is joining Staples from Danka Office Imaging where he was president, North America. He will be responsible for Staples' contract business and the North American operations of Staples Direct, including business development, operations, sales and marketing, information systems and distribution programs. He was educated at the State University of New York at Brockport and holds an advanced degree from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. He will report to Sargent.

Jeanne M. Lewis, 35, to executive vice president, marketing. Lewis joined Staples in 1993 and most recently was senior vice president, marketing. She oversees the strategic, operational and financial aspects of Staples' marketing programs. Lewis' responsibilities include both retail and the small business customer segment along with developing and supporting the global brand. Lewis holds degrees from Wellesley College and the Harvard Business School. She reports to Sargent.

Lawrence Morse, 49, to senior vice president, Quill Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Staples. Morse most recently was vice president for operations at Quill, the nation's premier direct marketer of office products. He has responsibility for customer service, corporate purchasing, information systems, transportation and distribution. He reports to Jack Miller, president of Quill. Morse was educated at Holy Cross College and Boston College.
