Staples' Coach of the Week Program Kicks Off Sixth Season; Each Week During the NFL Regular Season One Lucky School Will Win $5,000 in School Supplies Plus an NFL Head Coach Visit
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Jul 24, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) today announced the kick-off of the 6th annual "Staples Coach of the Week" program. Sponsored by Staples and in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and CBS Sports, the contest will award seventeen accredited K-12 schools a $5,000 Staples gift certificate and a visit from their local NFL head coach.

"The Staples Coach of the Week program is a wonderful program that takes the game off the playing field and brings it into the classroom by rewarding schools with inspirational visits from coaches," said Coach Tony Dungy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Coach of the Week winner. "It gives us a chance, as players and coaches, to support schools and academics and it gives Staples a chance to show their commitment to the community. Both of us working together, get to help out a school and we are very happy to do that."

"The students and faculty at St. Paul's Catholic School were thrilled to receive a visit from Coach Tony Dungy." His encouraging message inspired the students to work hard and the $5,000 donation of school supplies from Staples will go a long way to provide students with the tools they need to succeed at school," said Louise Cusumano, principal of St. Paul's Catholic School.

For seventeen weeks during the NFL regular season a panel of NFL representatives will choose one head coach each week whose leadership proves exemplary and merits the honor to be named "Staples Coach of the Week." One random entry submitted on behalf of a school in the winning coach's region will be drawn, and one lucky school will be the recipient of the prize. Both the coach and the school will be announced the following Sunday during The NFL Today show on the CBS Television Network.

While shopping for back-to-school supplies, students and parents can pick up an entry form at any Staples superstore or enter online at www.NFL.com/Staples. Entries must be postmarked before December 27, 2001.

Now in its sixth season, the "Staples Coach of the Week" program has awarded over $500,000 to local schools throughout the country. In addition to the $5,000 gift certificate from Staples and the visit from the local NFL coach, the student, parent, staff, or faculty member who submits the winning entry receives special recognition during the coach's visit, as well as a Staples gift certificate for personal use.
