Staples The Office Superstore Announces Newest Site Planned For Georgia's Largest Mall

Stores Scheduled to Open in Buford at Mall of Georgia Crossing, and in Marietta

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 1999--Staples Inc., operator of nearly 850 office superstores throughout North America, today announced that two additional sites have been added to its greater Atlanta-area market roster, bringing the total number of planned stores in the region to eight. Leases have been signed for stores at the Mall of Georgia Crossing in Buford, and at the Dallas Marietta Highway and VillaRica Road in Marietta. The new stores are slated to open in Fall 1999.

Joseph Vassalluzzo, president of Staples realty and development, said, "Staples has executed lease contracts for both Buford and Marietta, and is excited by the prospect of entering these markets. They are both healthy, vibrant and substantial communities with many and varied small business, small office and home office customers with an excellent retail environment."

Previously announced locations in the Atlanta area include Stone Mountain, Duluth, Midtown Crossing on Ponce de Leon in Atlanta, Carrollton, Cartersville and Alpharetta. Construction is also underway at sites in Augusta and Tifton, Ga. Staples currently operates one store in Brunswick.

Staples in Marietta and Buford will continue the company's longtime strategy of serving the small business customer, providing the latest technology, expert in-store assistance on products and services, and frequent educational opportunities, such as guest speakers on a variety of topics important to the small business professional.

The new superstores, each expected to employ up to 40 area residents, will stock more than 7,600 brand name office products at everyday low prices. The new 24,050 square foot Staples stores will provide general office supplies, office furniture, computers, software, and business machines, and a wide selection of teaching supplies. Additionally, the stores will feature technology centers with expanded computer services, including in-house support for computer upgrades and enhancements. Staples also will offer high speed and color copying, self-service copiers, faxing and binding services, and FedEx services to complete all one-stop shopping needs.

To complement Staples' aggressive store launch into Georgia and the Southeast region of the US, Staples in November of 1998 purchased the office and manufactured products business of Atlanta-based Ivan Allen Company, a longstanding and prominent regional contract stationer.
