Staples Enters Seattle Market

Eight New Stores Mark Commitment to Region

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., June 18, 2001 - Staples, Inc., the office superstore pioneer, today announced its entry into the Seattle area, with eight stores slated to open by the end of the year. The entrance into this new geographic region marks Staples commitment to the Seattle community, as well as confidence in its economy. Staples also operates nine other stores in the state of Washington.

According to Fortune Magazine, Seattle is the sixth best U.S. city in which to locate a business. This rating, along with a high percentage of small businesses in the area, makes it an ideal market for Staples superstores.

"We are focusing on this market because we believe Seattle's vibrant business community will continue to thrive and that Staples products and services are a match with the existing and upcoming needs of small business owners," said Ed Harsant, President, Staples North American Superstores. "We have been in the state of Washington since 1996 and entering Seattle is another step in becoming the one-stop shopping destination for small business owners in the region."

The new Staples stores will slash the cost and hassle for Seattle area customers by offering an easy shopping experience that will provide customers with substantial savings on more than 7,000 office products, furniture, technology, and business machines. In addition, Staples' increased focus on providing solutions for small businesses will help to further enhance Seattle's entrepreneurial landscape.

In January 2001, Staples rolled out Staples.com Access Points to all U.S. retail stores. Each new store will have at least four Staples.com Access Points to provide customers with over 40,000 additional product SKUs, product information and a variety of business services, including payroll processing, telecommunications and marketing. Staples is the first office supply superstore to offer customers the option to pay for on-line purchases via cash, check or credit at the store's registers.

Staples stores also feature a Build-To-Order computer area where customers can order a computer as well as obtain computer upgrades, software installations and consultations. Each new store also has a Copy Center for on-site copying and printing services. The Staples Copy Center provides commercial-grade, high-speed and color-copying, as well as self-serve copiers with customer workspace provided. Staples also offers full finishing services, such as folding, laminating and binding.

Staples' three-ways-to-shop philosophy offers Seattle area customers the ability to shop in-store, online at Staples.com or call-in to Staples catalog representatives.

Each new Staples store is about 24,000 square feet and employs approximately thirty area residents
