Staples Extends Commitment to Greater Atlanta Through Carter Center Donation; Staples Honors the Carter Center and the Allen Family
WESTBOROUGH, Mass. and ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 18, 1999-- Staples Inc., the pioneer of the office products superstore industry, today presented a donation to former President Jimmy Carter and The Carter Center in honor of the Allen family and its distinguished history of public service in Georgia. The donation complements the longstanding support of The Carter Center by the Allen family, founders of Atlanta-based contract stationer, Ivan Allen Company, recently acquired by Staples.

"Staples is pleased to continue in the proud tradition of the Allen family by serving the public interest," said Jay Baitler, senior vice president of Staples' contract division, who presented the check to President Carter. "We want to be more than just a place to buy office supplies, and we strive to become actively involved in the communities where we conduct business."

Ivan Allen Jr., chairman emeritus of Ivan Allen Company, and Ivan Allen IV, director, business development, Staples/Ivan Allen, represented the family at the donation presentation.

"The Carter Center is very important to our family and we are most grateful to Staples for its interest in and support of the splendid work being done by President and Mrs. Carter. On behalf of the Allen family, I express sincere appreciation to Staples for this fine gift," said Allen, Jr.

The Carter Center, chaired by President Jimmy Carter and in association with Emory University, advances peace and health worldwide. Among its many services, The Carter Center, based in Atlanta, promotes peace by bringing warring factions to the negotiating table, monitoring elections, safeguarding human rights, and building democracies through economic development.

Staples has recently been involved in other community activities in the Atlanta area. Last month, Staples and the NFL contributed $25,000 to the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation in recognition of Falcons Head Coach, Dan Reeves', and his selection as "Staples NFL Coach of the Year." The Youth Foundation is dedicated towards helping the young people of Georgia reach their full potential. In December of 1998, Campbell Middle School, in Smyrna, Ga., was one of two Georgia schools to have received $5,000 in office supplies from Staples over the past two years, as winners in the "Staples Coach of the Week" program with the NFL.

As part of Staples expansion into the Atlanta market, Staples announced last month that it will open at least eleven new Staples superstores in 1999 in Atlanta and in the State of Georgia, complementing its November 1998 purchase of the office and manufactured products business of Ivan Allen Company. Announcements for additional store openings in the region are expected in the near future.

Staples Inc. is a $7 billion retailer of office supplies, furniture and technology to consumers and business from home based businesses to Fortune 50 companies in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany. Headquartered outside Boston, Staples invented the office superstore concept and today is the largest operator of office superstores in the world.
