Staples Salutes Small Businesses; $25,000 Business Makeover Caps The Hats Off to Business Initiative

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2001--Staples' Hats Off to Business initiative is in full swing. Since September 22, small business customers have been registering to win the Ultimate Office Giveaway that includes a $25,000 business makeover and 100 weekly drawings for smaller prizes.

Customers have three ways to enter: in-store, by mail or by logging onto http://staples.com/ultimateoffice

Weekly winners are still eligible to win the Ultimate Office Giveaway grand prize. The contest runs through November 3, 2001.

The grand prize includes:

  • A $25,000 Shopping Spree towards a business makeover

  • A "Trailblazer Training" session with Doug Hall

  • One year payroll services (courtesy of ADP)

  • Logo redesign for your business

  • Complete stationery package

The Hats Off to Business initiative was created to support Staples' small business customers and through these challenging economic times, this program offers small businesses a multitude of ways to save money. Other Hats Off to Business rewards to small businesses are free delivery with no minimum purchase required; double Dividend$ savings, a deferred credit offering; and extra special merchandising buys.

Staples Dividend$ is a rewards program that provides small businesses with savings each quarter when they make purchases in-store, on-line and through the catalog.

In honor of National Women in Business Week (Oct. 15-19) Staples presents

FACTS & TIPS FOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS

FACT: By the year 2005, it is estimated that there will be 4.7 million self-employed women, which represents an increase of 77 percent since 1983. (The Journal Record, 5/14/01)

TIP: Create a financial plan for your small business: Set measurable goals and create a plan of action to meet those goals, and identify financial institutions that specialize in small business loans specifically for women.

FACT: Women-owned small businesses are more likely than small businesses overall to invest in computer equipment and to have a Web site according to Dun & Bradstreet.

TIP: Join industry associations and subscribe to industry magazines to keep current on industry news and trends.

FACT: Women entrepreneurs (72%) are significantly more likely to have investments in stocks, bonds, or mutual funds than are working women (58%). (Center for Women's Business Research, 2001)

TIP: Keep adequate up to date records for accounting and tax purposes.

FACT: Across the world, women-owned firms typically comprise between 1/4 and 1/3 of the business population. (Center of Women's Business Research, 2001)

TIP: If working from a home office: Set aside a separate area for business, start work at the same time everyday, schedule blocks of work time and personal time, dress as if you were going to work.

FACT: According to the National Foundation for Women Business Owners, there are nearly eight million women-owned businesses in the U.S., employing over 18.5 million people and generating close to $2.3 trillion in sales.
