|Staples Selects Charlotte Site For Distribution Center; Multi-Channel Center To Serve Southeast Customers|

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 1999--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) today announced that it has signed a lease for a multi-channel distribution center in Charlotte, N.C. Scheduled to be operational in the fall of 1999, the center will serve Staples contract, catalog and e-commerce customers.
"The new center will support Staples' rapid expansion in the
southeast market, and help us provide more efficient, localized
service," said Joseph G. Doody, president of Staples Contract and
Commercial division. "By moving to a multi-channel distribution
strategy, we will be able to provide the lowest cost delivery and
highest quality of customer service."
Crescent Resources, based in Charlotte, N.C., is building the
123,200 square-foot facility which will have the ability to be
expanded to more than 190,000 square-feet. Initially, the distribution
center will employee 40 people.
The addition of the Charlotte distribution center is part of
Staples overall effort to improve service and reduce delivery costs
throughout the organization. Several other existing distribution
centers will be converted to serve multiple channels later this year.
The first distribution center to be converted to a multi-channel
operation was in Putnam, Conn. last year.
