|Staples, Inc. Appoints Robert Mayerson Treasurer and Senior Vice President of Finance|
|FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Oct 23, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq:
SPLS), today announced the appointment of Robert Mayerson as senior vice
president and treasurer, responsible for developing and executing Staples'
financial, tax and risk management strategies. In his new role, Mayerson will
focus on the Back to Brighton initiative to restore profit margins to historical
levels, improve asset utilization, and will develop appropriate financing
strategies for Staples' increasing European presence. He will report to John
Mahoney, Staples' executive vice president and chief administrative officer.

Mayerson rejoins Staples from Tilion, Inc., an entrepreneurial software service provider where since 1999 he served as the chief financial officer. He previously spent six years at Staples, most recently as senior vice president and corporate controller. Mayerson led corporate-wide programs that delivered $100 million in cost savings through process improvement, centralized procurement and identification and implementation of best practices. Prior to joining Staples in 1993, he was the director of corporate finance for PepsiCo, Inc.
