|Staples Inc. Appoints Deborah G. Ellinger Head of Strategy|

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1999--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) today announced that Deborah G. Ellinger has joined the company as senior vice president of strategic planning. Ellinger serves on the company's senior management team and reports to Thomas G. Stemberg, chairman and chief executive officer of Staples. She succeeds Jeffrey L. Levitan, who previously was named senior vice president of Staples.com and new business development.

acquisition, distribution and other operational strategies will enable

In her new position, Ellinger will oversee the creation of
corporate and divisional strategies, review business and acquisition
ventures, and lead domestic and international planning and market
assessment projects within the company. Ellinger also will identify,
quantify and present appropriate strategic opportunities to senior
management to drive company growth, profits and shareholder value.
Most recently, Ellinger was a partner of The Boston Consulting
Group in Boston, where she focused on developing strategies for
Fortune 500 companies. She also held other positions in the consulting
group's Los Angeles and Boston offices. Prior to that, she held a
variety of positions at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, London and Los
Angeles, in the global merchant banking, capital markets, credit
policy and corporate consulting departments.
A resident of Wellesley, Ellinger studied mathematics and law at
Cambridge University, England, where she earned her bachelor's and
master's. She also qualified as a Barrister-at-Law in London, England.
