Jevin Eagle Promoted To Lead Staples Brands Business; Staples Brand Selection To Expand, Offering Customers Great Quality At Value Prices

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 8, 2003--Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) announced today the promotion of Jevin Eagle to senior vice president of Staples Brands. Effective immediately, Eagle is responsible for driving the growth of Staples' proprietary brands worldwide. The new position was created to support Staples' easy brand promise, build customer loyalty, differentiate the brand globally, and drive profitable sales growth.

In his new role, Eagle will focus on brand management, sourcing, quality, and packaging of all Staples Brands worldwide. He will report to Dave Perron, executive vice president of Merchandising and Supply Chain, who prior to joining Staples was responsible for the explosive growth of Meijer's private label brands. In the past year, sales of products developed and sold under the Staples brand names across all businesses have increased from seven to 10 percent.

"Staples Brands are a growing and important part of how we provide great products and value to our customers," said Ron Sargent, Staples president and CEO. "Over the past few years, our merchandising team has done a great job introducing value brands into our business strategy. Jevin will lead the new team in the transformation from private label to Staples Brand products, reinforcing quality and differentiation."

Previously Eagle was senior vice president of strategy. In this role, he has driven Staples worldwide strategy, and was one of the principal architects in developing Staples brand promise of making buying office products easy. He has also spearheaded the company's acquisition and growth platform strategies. A successor to this position is expected to be appointed in the coming months. Prior to joining Staples, Eagle was a partner and one of the leaders of the retail practice of McKinsey & Co., Inc.
