Staples Gives $50,000 and Much Needed Supplies to California Wildfire Disaster Relief

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Nov 10, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- In an effort to help the Southern California communities affected by the wildfires, Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) is providing $50,000 to fund relief efforts. Additionally, in-kind product donations are being made to students, relief workers and small businesses.

"We are grateful to Staples for their efforts to help our families, students and businesses begin the process of getting their lives back on track," said Louise Kolbert, American Red Cross Disaster Relief Operations Director. "Support from our business community provides welcome relief as we work through the aftermath of this disaster."

To assist the most devastated communities, Staples is donating $25,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, $15,000 to Catholic Charities of San Diego and $10,000 to Catholic Charities of LA Fire Disaster Aid Fund. In addition, Catholic Charities will manage a fund Staples has established to provide additional assistance to its impacted associates.

To help students return to school, Staples is outfitting more than 1000 children in San Diego, San Bernardino, and Simi Valley with gift bags of essential supplies to replenish what was lost to the fires. The Chabad Hebrew Academy grammar school in San Diego was completely destroyed in the fires and will receive donations of furniture. Displaced businesses will also receive furniture donations to help set up temporary offices. Additionally, company employees who have been evacuated from their homes are receiving cash donations to help support their immediate needs. Thousands of bottles of water, corrugated boxes and writing instruments were also provided for relief efforts. All Staples facilities that were temporarily closed have resumed operations.
