|Staples Names Gary L. Crittenden to Its Board of Directors; Crittenden Brings Financial and Retail Industry Expertise to Staples Board|
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 2004--Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) announced today the appointment of Gary L. Crittenden, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, American Express Company to its board of directors.

At American Express, Crittenden advises on worldwide strategic and financial matters. Prior to joining American Express, he was chief financial officer of Monsanto Company and Sears Roebuck & Company.
Crittenden currently serves on the board of directors of The TJX Companies Inc., and Ryerson Tull Inc. He also is a board member of the Connecticut Yankee Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
He holds a BS degree in Management from Brigham Young University and an MBA from Harvard University.
