Ronald L. Sargent Elected to Staples Inc. Board of Directors

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1999--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) today announced that Ronald L. Sargent, president and chief operating officer of Staples Inc., has been elected a member of the company's board of directors.

"As a ten year veteran of Staples and an integral member of the company's senior management team, Ron has proven to be a tremendous asset in building Staples to its leadership position in the office superstore industry," said Staples Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Thomas G. Stemberg. "We look forward to his participation as a director."

Mr. Sargent is responsible for Staples' worldwide operations, including U.S., Canadian and European retail superstores, Staples Contract and Commercial, including the Quill brand, and the company's supply chain management and marketing activities. He joined Staples in 1989 and has worked in a number of roles throughout the organization, including president of North American Operations.

Prior to joining Staples, Mr. Sargent was with Kroger Co., the nation's largest supermarket retailer, where he held a variety of positions in store operations, human resources, strategic planning, sales management and marketing.

A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, Mr. Sargent resides in Hopkinton, Mass., with his wife and two children.
