Staples Promotes Jeanne Lewis to Marketing Chief

    WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 1998--Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) announced today that it has promoted Jeanne B. Lewis to Senior Vice President, Marketing, effective February 1. Ms. Lewis will report to Ronald Sargent, President, North American Operations.
    Ms. Lewis replaces Todd Krasnow, who is about to launch a new entrepreneurial venture after 12 years with Staples.
    Ms. Lewis is currently Senior Vice President, Retail Marketing and Small Business, and has marketing, operations and merchandising experience in her five years with Staples. She has served as Director of Operations for 50 stores in the Northeast, and then as Director of Sales for 150 stores on the East Coast. She then became Vice President and Divisional Merchandising Manager for furniture and decorative supplies.
    Since she assumed her current position in early 1997, she has been a key architect of Staples' marketing and branding strategy, and of Staples advertising, direct mail and field marketing organizations.
    Ms. Lewis is a graduate of Wellesley College and the Harvard Business School.
    Staples currently operates 742 office products superstores worldwide. This includes 685 stores in more that 150 markets across the US and Canada, as well as 40 stores in the United Kingdom and 17 in Germany. Staples operates a telephone order business, Staples Direct, and also has contract stationer operations called Staples Business Advantage and Staples National Advantage, which serve the needs of large regional and national corporations, respectively.
