Staples to Open Store at Newark International Airport

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2000--Staples, Inc. today announced its plans to open a store at the Newark International Airport in May. This is the third Staples airport location, adding to stores currently open at the Philadelphia International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport. The Newark airport store will offer travelers three ways to shop: traditional retail, a kiosk linked to Staples.com and a direct phone line to Staples catalog representatives.

"The airport stores in Philadelphia and Boston have been doing very well and we are excited to extend the concept to travelers through the busy Newark International Airport," said Jim Peters, president of U.S. Stores, Staples. "The airport store is the latest way Staples will provide customers with hassle-free shopping to help them keep up with their business while on the road, especially for last-minute supplies or services they need prior to reaching their final destination."

William R. DeCota, director of aviation for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Newark International Airport, as well as Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports, called the Staples store "a very welcome addition." "Staples and the Port Authority share an exceptionally strong commitment to customer service, and we're very pleased that our airport customers will be able to avail themselves of this convenience," he said.

The 1,330 square foot airport store is to be located in Continental Airlines Terminal C, across from the Garden State Diner. The store will carry a varied selection of merchandise suited to the needs of the business traveler, including small pack sizes of paper and file folders, organizers, presentation materials, general office supplies, travel supplies, luggage and small electronics such as hand held organizers and calculators. Customers will also be able to buy build-to-order computers. Self-service copying, faxing and shipping will also be offered and are popular services for business travelers.

For customers who want to order supplies and have them delivered to their final travel destination, home or office, a Staples.com kiosk and a specially marked telephone linked to Staples catalog operators will be available for those purchases. Staples offers free next-day delivery on purchases over $50.

Staples recently received an award as the "Best New Specialty Airport Retail Concept" by World Airport Retail News.
