Staples Makes Tax Deadline Day Easy for Last-Minute Filers With Free Curbside Copies of Returns; Company Stresses Importance of Keeping Hard Copies of Important Documents

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 13, 2006--Staples, Inc., (Nasdaq:SPLS) is going streetside for tax deadline day, deploying mobile Copy & Print Centers on the curb next to the busiest post offices in six cities across the country including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Staples is offering free copies of tax returns until a half-hour before the midnight filing deadline to make it easy for tax filers to maintain copies of their important documents.

"Taxpayers are hard-pressed to make the midnight filing deadline and often, when they need to make copies the most, there isn't a copy machine handy. Staples is bringing the copiers curbside to help make a hard day easier for last-minute filers and stress the importance of keeping copies of tax-related forms," said John Burke, senior vice president of business services at Staples.

Electronic filing continues to gain in popularity - according to the IRS, 70 percent of all returns were e-filed as of March 22, compared with 68 percent for the same period last year - but tax experts advise keeping a hard copy on file in case of mistakes or questions from the IRS once tax returns have been submitted.

"The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants supports electronic filing, but we also strongly recommend keeping a hard copy of the return, worksheets, schedules, invoices and receipts for at least three years," said Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president-taxation for the AICPA.

Because April 15 falls on a weekend, taxpayers have a little extra time to file their 2005 returns. Most of the country will have to file on Monday, April 17. The deadline is April 18 for taxpayers in Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and the District of Columbia, because of a state holiday in Massachusetts where the IRS has a processing facility.

Staples will have the streetwise versions of its Copy & Print Centers at the following locations open between 10 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. on the following dates:

    April 17
  • Chicago - Cardiss Collins Postal Store, 433 W. Harrison Street
  • Los Angeles - Airport Station- Los Angeles International Airport, 9029 Airport Blvd.
  • Philadelphia - 2970 Market Street
  • San Francisco - 1300 Evans Avenue, No. 207
    April 18
