|Staples Opens Southern California Multi-Channel Fulfillment Center|
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2000--Staples Retail and Delivery today announced the opening of a multi-channel fulfillment center in Ontario, Calif. to serve Staples contract, catalog and e-commerce customers.
"The Southern California fulfillment center will help us better serve our customers with more efficient, localized service," said Joseph G. Doody, president of Staples Contract and Commercial. "By moving to a multi-channel distribution strategy, we will be able to deliver the highest quality of customer service while reducing our distribution overhead costs."
The new state-of-the-art fulfillment center will consolidate two existing sites that each currently service a single Staples sales channel. All current Staples fulfillment center employees have been offered positions at the new facility. Staples will employ more than 125 people at this new facility, with plans to add over 200 employees over the next three years.
Initially, Staples intends to occupy 330,000 of the 450,000 square feet available and expand as needed. The Southern California fulfillment center is designed to provide the most advanced order processing available with over three miles of conveyer moving product throughout the facility.
The company is also doubling the number of Staples trucks, which deliver office supplies and furniture in the Los Angeles area. All fleet trucks have the Staples name and toll-free number on the side.
"In addition to speeding deliveries, a dedicated delivery service allows us to control an important point of contact for our customers," said Doody.
The addition of the Southern California fulfillment center is part of Staples' overall effort to improve service and cut down on delivery costs throughout the organization. The fulfillment center will serve customers in southern California, Arizona and Nevada.
Currently, Staples operates multi-channel fulfillment centers in Stockton, Calif., Putnam, Conn., Charlotte, N.C. and soon to start construction on a 500,000 square-foot facility in London, Ohio. Several other existing fulfillment centers will be converted to serve multiple channels throughout this year.
