Staples and Philadelphia International Airport Win ‘Most Innovative Concession’ Award From Airports Council International

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – May 9, 2000 – Staples Retail and Delivery, the pioneer of the office supplies industry, today announced that its new airport retail store at Philadelphia International Airport was selected as the “Most Innovative Concession” for large-sized airports for 1999 by Airports Council International (ACI). This is the second award Staples has won for the concept since the first store opened in September 1999.

“It is an honor to be recognized in the airport industry as having a retail concept that is truly meeting the needs of the traveling public,” said Jim Peters, president of Staples U.S. stores. “We are very pleased with the store’s performance and the positive reaction it has received from business travelers since it launched last year. The airport store is the latest way Staples provides customers with hassle-free shopping to help them keep up with their business while on the road, especially for last-minute supplies or services they need prior to reaching their final destination,” said Peters.

Staples also received the ‘Best New Specialty Retail Concept’ award from World Airport Retail News in February 2000. World Airport Retail News tapped Staples for its brand identity, pricing controls and success in meeting a real need in the airport environment.

"We congratulate Staples for winning an award that recognizes their creative outreach to the Airport customer. We are proud that Staples' first airport store opened here in Philadelphia, and we salute our retail developer, MarketPlace Redwood, for bringing them here," stated Charles J. Isdell, Jr., Philadelphia International Airport's Acting Director of Aviation.

The Staples airport retail concept is unique because it carries a varied selection of merchandise suited to the needs of the business traveler and offers airport travelers three ways to shop: traditional retail, a kiosk linked to Staples.com and a direct phone line to Staples catalog representatives. By offering Staples.com and the catalog offerings within the retail store, Staples customers can order supplies and have them delivered the next day to their final travel destination, home or office.

The store offers a range of supplies and technology products including small pack sizes of paper and file folders, organizers, presentation materials, general office supplies, travel supplies, luggage, build-to-order computers and small electronics, such as hand held organizers, and calculators. Self-service copying, faxing and shipping is also offered and are popular services for business travelers.

Staples currently operates two airport stores, located in Terminal B at Philadelphia International Airport and Terminal C at Logan International Airport. The Staples store in Philadelphia International Airport is part of the airport’s 100,000 square foot retail revitalization program being developed by the City of Philadelphia and its private partner, MarketPlace Redwood L.P. Staples is opening its third store in Continental Airlines Terminal C at Newark International Airport May 2000 and plans to open more stores this year.
