Staples, Inc. Announces Merchandising Executive Promotions

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 2007--Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) today announced executive promotions in its merchandising organization that will help drive the company's growth. Jevin Eagle has been promoted to executive vice president, merchandising and David D'Angelo has been promoted to senior vice president, Staples Brand Group. In addition, Petter Knutrud has been promoted to senior vice president, general merchandising manager, Merchandise Supplies.

"Jevin and Dave have done an outstanding job building Staples own brand to 20 percent of our sales and Petter has brought new energy to our office supplies category," said Dave Perron, Staples executive vice president of merchandising and supply chain. "I know that they will work with the rest of the merchandising team to give Staples an innovative and differentiated product assortment that will continue to fuel our growth."

In his new role, Eagle will oversee all merchandising categories including Technology, Supplies and Office Decor, as well as Pricing and Portfolio Management. He joined Staples in 2002 as head of strategy and was most recently senior vice president, Staples Brand Group. Under Eagle's leadership, Staples greatly enhanced the quality, innovation and selection of Staples brand products, which grew from 11 percent in 2002 to 20 percent of sales in 2006. Eagle will continue to report to Dave Perron.

D'Angelo assumes Eagle's previous role and will be responsible for Staples brand products, including Brand Management, Sales and Marketing, Product Quality and the company's direct sourcing office in China. He joined Staples in 1999 and was most recently vice president, Product Development Sourcing & Operations, Staples Brand Group, where he played a core role in driving the success of Staples brand products and the significant expansion in direct sourcing. D'Angelo will report to Dave Perron.

Knutrud will continue to lead all merchandising for Staples' Supplies group, which played a key role in driving record results for Staples' 2006 Back to School season. He joined Staples in 1994 and previously served as vice president, general merchandising manager, Merchandise Supplies. Knutrud will report to Jevin Eagle.
