|NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade and Staples Present Mitchell/Moore Park with $25,000 Staples Dream Park Challenge Grand Prize|
Dwyane Wade Joins More Than 500 Pompano Beach Residents in Public
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 2008--Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) and NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade, along with more than 500 Pompano Beach residents, today celebrated this year's winner of the Staples Dream Park Challenge - Mitchell/Moore Park of Pompano Beach. Wade joined City of Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher and Commissioners Rex Hardin, George Brummer, Charlotte Burrie and Barry Dockswell at Mitchell/Moore Park to award the community with the grand-prize award of $25,000 for park improvements.
"The Dream Park Challenge is all about true teamwork," said Wade. "With more than one-third of the total votes cast, Pompano Beach residents worked together to win this challenge and make their local park a better place for everyone, especially its children."
The event featured an appearance by South Florida's own DJ Irie, who kept the crowd going with fun tunes and lively games. In addition, the Blanche Ely High School Marching Band introduced Wade to the stage to officially kick-off the awards presentation. Event attendees included VIP guests, children from local summer camp programs, area students and families.
Wade and Staples also surprised the City of Pompano Beach Parks and Recreation Director Alan Ricke and his staff with an additional $2,500 donation for their hard work in encouraging the entire Pompano Beach community to support the local park. The Parks and Recreation staff spared no resource in promoting the park's participation in the Dream Park Challenge - from placing computers in City Hall enabling employees and residents to easily vote, to encouraging student participation at nearby schools. Dozens of employees were also bused to nearby Staples stores to pickup "power cards," which enabled residents to earn 10 extra online votes.
"On behalf of the Pompano Beach City Commission, I would like to thank the students, city employees and residents who voted for Mitchell/Moore Park and helped us win the Staples Dream Park Challenge," said City of Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher. "It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the celebration with Staples and D-Wade who have generously presented Pompano Beach with the grand prize of $25,000 to improve Mitchell/Moore Park for our residents."
The Staples Dream Park Challenge is a park improvement initiative that encourages communities to work together to win renovation money for their local parks. From Feb. 14 to April 10, 2008, Staples invited residents to vote for their favorite park at www.StaplesDreamPark.com. During the second year of the Dream Park Challenge, Mitchell/Moore Park received approximately 99,000 out of the 261,000 votes cast. Park officials have announced that they plan to use their prize money to improve the tennis and handball courts, and purchase new playground equipment. Last year, John E. Mullin Park (formerly known as City Hall Park) of Lauderhill won the grand prize.
"Staples is deeply committed to supporting the communities where our associates and customers live and work," said Andy Garcia, Staples district manager. "In the two years of conducting the Dream Park Challenge, Staples has donated $114,000 to 32 parks throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We look forward to continuing our support of local communities and providing much-needed resources to assist in the positive development of all residents."
The Dream Park Challenge is just one of the many community programs Wade and Staples have teamed up to implement in South Florida. On Thurs., June 12, Staples and Wade will work together again to launch the Staples Win-Win Challenge, a new online contest that will make it easy for small businesses to make a big difference. Through the contest, Staples will reward one South Florida business with $10,000 to present to its favorite local charity. In addition, the winning small business will receive other prizes, including business name and photo recognition in The Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel, a $2,500 Staples(R) Gift Card and a congratulatory check ceremony with Wade.
