Staples Makes It Easy to 'Print Responsibly'
Company Offers Free Double-Sided Copies of Tax Returns, Free Scans to PDFs

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 25, 2009-- In an effort to encourage people to print responsibly, Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) is providing environmentally-friendly printing solutions – and savings – during the tax season. From April 5 – 15, Staples will offer free black and white, double-sided copies – up to 20 pages - of 2008 tax returns. Additionally, Staples is making it easy for customers to keep an electronic and secure copy of important documents by offering 100 free scans to PDF documents until July 4 at all Copy & Print Center locations for customers who purchase a Staples Copy & Print Center USB flash drive.

“We can all save a considerable amount of money, and have a positive impact on the environment, by taking a few minutes to think before hitting the print button on the copier or computer,” said John Burke, senior vice president of business services at Staples. “By offering free scans and copies during the tax season, we can help customers keep records of their tax returns both electronically and in hard-copy format while printing responsibly. This is good for the wallet and the environment – and another way Staples is making it easy for customers to save on a wide variety of products and services.”

Staples environmentally-friendly printing solutions include:

  • Print double-sided copies. In 2006, more than 99,778,437 tons of paper, or 663 pounds per person, were consumed, according to the Secret Life of Paper. By printing double-sided documents, this number can be reduced 20% annually. Using the “double-sided” button on the office copier can reduce monthly paper expenses by $60, according to ENERGY STAR.
  • Scan documents to PDF and save onto a flash drive. It’s always a good idea to have a “back-up” file of tax returns, legal documents and other files.
  • Use recycled and FSC-certified paper. According to Conservatree, one ton of non-recycled copy paper uses 24 trees, and one tree makes 8,333 sheets of paper. All of Staples Copy & Print Centers use 50 percent post consumer-waste recycled content paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as the standard offering for black and white high-speed copy and print jobs.
  • Proof and preview before printing. Use the “print preview” function to preview your document before you print to make sure the right paper size and orientation is selected. According to Ecopreneurist.com, the average single document gets copied 19 times.
  • Recycle. Remember to responsibly dispose your ink and toner cartridges, as well as printers and other office technology. Staples will now allow customers to earn $3 back in Staples Rewards on any brand or type of ink or toner just for choosing to recycle these products instead of throwing them away. Recent studies have shown that 70 percent of cartridges used worldwide are thrown away, adding to the pressing national e-waste problem and preventing tons of readily recyclable materials from being recovered and reused.

In addition, eco-friendly printing products, from recycled paper to the latest printer can also help save money and the environment when printing is a must. Visit a Staples retail location for more information.
