Staples Inc. Receives CIO-100 Award for Innovative Business Practices

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 7, 2001--Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) today announced that it has been named a CIO-100 award honoree for the fourth consecutive year by CIO - the magazine for information executives. The prestigious award recognizes organizations around the world that excel in business performance through innovative products, relationships and processes. Staples is the only office supply retailer to win the award this year.

"In order to survive in the competitive business world, companies rely on innovative ideas and development of those ideas into sound business processes," said Abbie Lundberg, Editor in Chief, CIO magazine. "Honorees of this year's CIO-100 have done just that and are being recognized for their ingenuity and success."

"We are honored to be recognized by CIO magazine with the CIO-100 Award for the fourth consecutive year," said Brian Light, chief information officer of Staples. "By implementing best-in-class technologies and processes, Staples continues to improve the customer experience across its store, catalog and online channels."

Among its achievements this year, Staples completed an ambitious roll-out of Internet Access Point kiosks to its nearly 1,000 stores nationwide. In doing so, Staples became the first office supply retailer to provide store customers access to products and services over the Web, integrating multiple channels for the most convenient and complete shopping experience.

In addition to the CIO-100 award, other recent Staples honors include being named by InternetWeek as one of the top 100 e-businesses and by ComputerWorld as being one of the best places to work for IT professionals.

The recipients of this year's CIO-100 were selected by a panel of experts which reviewed the companies and nominated those they felt best showed an expertise in implementing innovative practices and products that result in a positive business performance. A team of CIO editors and writers then reviewed the recommendations and voted on the final 100. Complete coverage of the 2001 CIO-100 Awards is featured in the August 15 issue of CIO magazine and at www.cio.com.
