Staples Joins America Recycles Day Call for Recycling; As a Champion Sponsor, Staples Encourages Americans to Recycle and to 'Close the Loop' by Buying Recycled Products
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Nov 12, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- As a champion sponsor of America Recycles Day, Nov. 15, Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) asks Americans to renew their commitment to recycling. Staples encourages Americans to increase their recycling efforts at home, school and work and to "close the loop" by selecting recycled content products whenever they shop.

"America Recycles Day is a great way to remind people about the importance of recycling," said Joseph Vassalluzzo, Staples vice chairman. "Staples is proud to be a sponsor of America Recycles Day. By working together in closing the recycling loop, we all help to protect our natural resources."

Staples' collaboration with America Recycles Day goes hand in hand with the company's commitment to offering customers recycled content products. In stores nationwide, Staples offers about 450 recycled products in a dozen categories--from copy and laser papers to file folders and corrugated storage boxes to remanufactured ink cartridges. Across its stores, websites and catalogs, Staples offers about 1,000 recycled products. Examples of these products include 50% post-consumer content (pcc) copy paper, 40% pcc notebooks, and 50% pcc index cards.

"Commitments to recycling from corporate leaders like Staples helps make America Recycles Day be a real success," said America Recycles Day board Chairman Pablo Collins. "Through its champion sponsorship of our program and every-day selection of recycled content products in all its stores, Staples helps increase awareness about recycling, and, equally important, allows people to close the recycling loop by buying recycled products."

As part of its work with America Recycles Day at the local level, Staples is helping build awareness about recycling at select stores. To do so, Staples is working with the City of Seattle, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's regional office in San Francisco, and Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection.

Last year, more than 3.3 million Americans took the recycling pledge. To find out about America Recycles Day events in your community, pledge online, or for more information about the campaign, visit the website at

Staples Environmental Programs

In addition to its collaboration with America Recycles Day, Staples has several environmental programs underway:

Under its recycled product promotion programs, Staples recently launched "Green Shops" in stores throughout the Seattle area and in Hershey, Penn. The innovative Green Shop display area showcases hundreds of recycled products carried by Staples, including copy paper, file folders, envelopes, notebooks, index cards, recycled toner cartridges and packing and shipping supplies. The shops feature green-colored shelving and educational signage that details how each product is earth-friendly. The Green Shop is an extension of the recycling signage Staples has had in stores for several years. Staples plans to roll out additional Green Shops selectively as it opens new stores or remodels existing locations.

In addition, Staples is implementing a recycling drop-off pilot program at four stores in the Northeast. Small businesses and consumers can drop off corrugated cardboard, plastic bags and office paper at recycling bins outside stores fronts in Norwalk and E. Hartford, Conn.; Seabrook, N.H.; and Norwood, Mass.

Realizing that a large part of being environmentally responsible is education, Staples is placing a new emphasis on better educating its customers on the importance of recycled products. Staples recently installed more prominent signs in stores to alert customers to its recycled paper offerings. The corporate website,, features an educational section to highlight the value of recycled products. Go to Paper/Recycled Paper/Recycled Products/Learn More About Recycling.
