Online Voting Begins Today for Staples Coach of the Year Award; Fans to Select Top NFL Coach and Enter Super Bowl Sweepstakes

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 2001--Fans may now vote online for the NFL head coach they believe deserves this year's Staples NFL Coach of the Year award. Through January 27, 2002, fans can log onto to make sure their vote is counted in the only NFL award determined solely by a vote of the fans.

The winning head coach will be announced January 27th during the AFC Championship pre-game show on CBS. In addition, $25,000 will be presented to the coach's selected charity on behalf of Staples and the NFL.

"Like loyal customers, the NFL has its loyal fans. It's a great honor for a coach to be acknowledged by the people who are as important as the players on the field are. The fans help make the game exciting," said Thomas Stemberg, Staples chairman and chief executive officer.

"Voting on for the Staples NFL Coach of the Year enables fans around the world to voice their opinion for this year's top coach," said Roger Goodell, the NFL's executive vice president of business, properties and club services. "We are pleased to work with Staples to offer our fans this opportunity to salute their favorite coach."

The program kicked off in 1998 with its first winner, Dan Reeves, of the Atlanta Falcons. Last season, the New Orleans Saints' Jim Haslett earned the honor and a donation of $25,000 was awarded to his favorite charity, the New Orleans chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Last year, over 200,000 votes were cast overall and participation this year is expected to be even higher. This year, fans who vote will also be able to enter the Staples Coach of the Year Super Bowl Sweepstakes. The Grand Prize is a trip for two to Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans in February.

The Staples NFL Coach of the Year award complements the Staples Coach of the Week program that honors an NFL head coach each week for an outstanding game during the regular season. In conjunction with this recognition, a local school in that coach's region is randomly drawn from entries to receive a $5,000 Staples gift certificate and a visit from the coach. Now in its sixth year, Staples has donated more than $400,000 in school supplies to schools nationwide through the Staples Coach of the Week program. Staples is also the official provider of office supplies to the NFL.
