Meg Whitman Elected To The Board Of Staples Inc.

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 1999--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS)today announced that Meg Whitman, president and chief executive officer of eBay, has been elected a member of its board of directors.

Ms. Whitman has had a stalwart career in global management, operations and marketing for some of the nation's leading brands. She joined the eBay team as president and chief executive officer in February 1998, and has guided the most popular online trading community to its most recent successes. In January 1999, MediaMetrix rated eBay the second most popular Web site, according to total minutes of use.

Prior to joining eBay, Ms. Whitman was general manager of Hasbro Inc.'s Preschool Division, where she oversaw the reorganization and return to profitability of the division and was responsible for the global management and marketing for two of the world's best-known children's brands, Playskool and Mr. Potato Head.

As president and chief executive officer of Florists Transworld Delivery (FTD), Ms. Whitman transitioned the florist-owned association to a for-profit, privately owned company and launched its Internet strategy.

She also served as president of the Stride Rite Corporation's Stride Rite division and had also been executive vice president for the Ked's division and served as corporate vice president of strategic planning. In addition, Ms. Whitman served as senior vice president of marketing in the Walt Disney Company's consumer products division, was a vice president at Bain and Company, and began her career in brand management at Procter and Gamble Company.

A graduate of the Harvard Business School, Ms. Whitman received her bachelor's from Princeton University.
