Staples.com and CNN Interactive Strike Online Marketing Agreement; Staples.com to Be Exclusive Office Supplies Retailer for Shop@CNN

    FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 3, 1999--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) today announced an online marketing agreement with CNN Interactive to become the exclusive office supplies merchant for Shop@CNN, CNN Interactive's newest online initiative, also launched today. CNN.com visitors are 141 percent more likely than the average Web user to make an online purchase, according to a CyberDialogue CNN.com Visitor Profile Study.

"This agreement with CNN, combined with our existing partnerships with Yahoo! and GeoCities, will extend Staples' online reach to small businesses," said Jeff Levitan, senior vice president of Staples.com. "The visibility on CNN.com will continue to make Staples.com the destination for office supplies on the Web."

In addition to being the exclusive office supplies merchant at Shop@CNN, Staples.com will be featured in rotating banner ads on the Shop@CNN module on every page of the site. Staples.com will also feature special offers in Shop@CNN's free weekly promotions e-mail.
