Staples Coach of the Week Kicks-Off Seventh Season; Seventeen Lucky Schools to Each Win $5,000 in School Supplies from Staples Plus a Visit from Their Local NFL Head Coach

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BW SportsWire)--July 1, 2002--Staples Inc. today announced that entries are now being accepted for the seventh season of the Staples Coach of the Week program. Each year the program awards seventeen accredited K-12 schools $5,000 worth of school supplies from Staples and a visit from their local NFL head coach.

"It's a great opportunity for students, parents and community members to help their local school get free school supplies and also a visit from one of us," said Tony Dungy, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and six-time Staples Coach of the Week winner. "The coaches really enjoy getting out into the community and talking to children about how important it is to stay in school. It's a fun day for everyone."

The program is sponsored by Staples and is in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and the CBS Television Network. Now in its seventh year, the Staples Coach of the Week program has distributed more than $500,000 worth of school supplies to schools across the country. From computers to scissors, schools are able to purchase whatever supplies are needed with their student's education.

"The program is wonderful," said Mary Ann Galassetti, superintendent for Highlands Elementary School in Highlands, New Jersey, a winning school last year. "Coach Herman Edwards of the New York Jets came to our school and captivated the hearts and minds of our children. His genuine warmth and concern for our students was so evident."

Each week of the NFL regular season, a panel of NFL representatives will choose one head coach whose leadership proves exemplary and merits the honor to be named the Staples Coach of the Week. One random entry submitted on behalf of a school in the winning coach's region will be drawn, and one lucky school will be the recipient of the $5,000 prize and a visit from the coach. In addition to the prize and coach visit, the person who submits the winning entry receives a special recognition during the coach's visit as well as a Staples gift certificate for personal use.

Each week both the winning coach and school will be announced the following Sunday during THE NFL TODAY pre-game show at noon (EST) on CBS.
