|Staples, Inc. Appoints Paul Capelli Vice President of Public Relations|
|FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Sep 23, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq:
SPLS), today announced the appointment of Paul Capelli to vice president of
public relations, effective immediately. With more than 15 years of corporate
and marketing public relations experience representing world-class
organizations, Capelli will now drive the company's communications strategies
across all business units. He will report to Shira Goodman, Staples executive
vice president of Marketing.

Most recently, Capelli served as vice president of public relations and a member of CNBC Television's executive management team. He was responsible for CNBC's global corporate communications and helped the network attain its highest levels of viewership and recognition as the world's leading business news channel. Prior to CNBC, Capelli was a senior public relations executive for Amazon.com where he designed and executed corporate and brand building strategies, building the company's customer-centric reputation. During Capelli's tenure, Amazon.com evolved from an online book store to become the world's leading multi-product online retailer. His efforts helped Amazon.com became a globally recognized brand that garnered extensive media awareness, including CEO Jeff Bezos being named Time magazine's "Person of the Year" in 1999.
Previously, Capelli served as a senior vice president with Ketchum Public Relations where he represented global Fortune 500 companies in a variety of industries including retail, consumer products, sports and finance. He also directed the company's Miami office, which included national U.S. Hispanic and Latin America network operations.
Capelli holds a bachelor's degree in Communications and Public Relations from Rowan University and has received numerous public relations industry awards including the PRSA Silver Anvil. He is a member of the PRSA and the Arthur W. Page Society.
