FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--July 19, 1999--Staples Inc. today announced the 4th annual "Staples Coach of the Week" program beginning July 22. Sponsored by Staples in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and CBS, the contest will award seventeen accredited K-12 schools a $5,000 Staples gift certificate and a visit from their local NFL head coach.

For seventeen weeks during the NFL regular season beginning Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, a panel of NFL representatives will choose the head coach whose leadership guided his team to the best performance of the previous week. A winning school entry is then randomly selected from the geographic area of the NFL coach who is honored as the "Staples Coach of the Week." Both the coach and the school are announced the following Sunday during THE NFL TODAY pre-game show on CBS.

So while students and parents are doing their back-to-school shopping they can pick up an entry form at any Staples superstore or enter online at www.staples.com. Entries must be postmarked before Dec. 24, 1999.

"The leadership of NFL coaches and their commitment to excellence and teamwork serve as a wonderful role model for our students," said Tom Stemberg, chairman and chief executive officer of Staples, Inc. "By providing supplies to schools plus an inspirational message to students, Staples is proud to further its commitment to the educational process."

"Schools like ours never have extra dollars for supplies, then all of a sudden we have $5,000 to spend at Staples," said Irene Hucek, principal of Glenbrook Elementary School in Pulaski, Wis., one of last season's winners. Now in its fourth season, the "Staples Coach of the Week" program has awarded more than $200,000 in supplies to 40 schools throughout the country.

In addition to the $5,000 gift certificate from Staples each winning school will host a visit from its area NFL head coach at a student assembly or other group function. The student, parent, staff, or faculty member who submits the winning entry will receive special recognition during the coach's visit, as well as a Staples gift certificate for personal use.
