Staples Inc. Wins CIO-100 Award
    Business Editors

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 1999--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) today announced it has been named a CIO-100 winner for the second consecutive year by CIO - the magazine for information executives. The award is presented annually to 100 companies who exemplify the best of the best in operational and strategic excellence around the world, and possess the strategy, ability and drive to prosper in the new millennium. This year, Staples is the only office superstore to win the award.

"Receiving an honor of this stature is very gratifying and a result of our associates' dedication to preparing to take on the challenges of the next century," said Brian Light, chief information officer of Staples. "Staples is committed to operating a world class IT infrastructure and recognizes how it better serves our customer."

"The transition into the new economy will be a painful one for many organizations," said Abbie Lundberg, CIO Magazine's Editor in Chief. "Those that make it must possess the qualities of this year's CIO-100 winners. They must know their customers, leverage the Internet, invest in people, innovate like crazy and completely reinvent themselves if necessary. This year's honorees have excelled in these areas and their success is well worth celebrating."

The winners of this year's CIO-100 were selected through a three-step process. First, a panel of 18 distinguished academicians, consultants and analysts nominated the companies they felt best fit CIO's criteria for being well-positioned to succeed beyond 2000. Then, CIO magazine staff conducted extensive research on the 151 nominees via the Web and other sources. Finally, a team of CIO editors and writers voted on the 100 companies they felt best met the requirements.
