John M. Sallay Appointed Staples Senior Vice President of Strategy

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 2004--Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) announced today the appointment of John M. Sallay to senior vice president of strategy. Reporting to Basil Anderson, Staples vice chairman, Sallay will direct major strategic initiatives at the world's largest office products company.

"John brings over 25 years of strategic leadership experience to his role in helping drive long-term growth initiatives for Staples," said Anderson. "His excellent performance in fields such as investment banking, consulting and consumer brand management makes John a great fit for the position and with the Staples culture."

Prior to joining Staples, Sallay served as Chairman and CEO of Manifold Products, a Boston-area firm focused on developing innovative consumer products based on new and proprietary technologies. He has also served in leadership roles for TH Lee Putnam Ventures, Credit Suisse First Boston, Harvard Management Company, McKinsey & Company and Procter & Gamble. Sallay has a graduate degree from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sallay and his wife live in Weston, MA.
