Staples Promotes James C. Peters to President of U.S. Stores

    WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 1998--Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) announced today the promotion of James C. Peters to president of U.S. stores. Mr. Peters joined Staples in September 1997 as executive vice president of U.S. stores, and in his new role he will continue to report to Ronald Sargent, president of North American operations.
    Mr. Peters joined the Company with over 10 years experience in the office superstore industry. He began his retail career in 1984 with Price Club, then in 1986 helped found Office Club which was later merged with Office Depot. Prior to joining Staples, Peters had most recently served as senior vice president of Office Depot's western division overseeing 240 stores in 15 states.
    Commenting on the announcement, Ronald Sargent stated, "Jim has made tremendous progress in charting the key priorities for the retail division, and has proven to be an outstanding addition to Staples.
