    WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 6, 1998--

Seventeen Schools to be Awarded $5,000 Each Throughout NFL Season

Staples is teaming up with the National Football League (NFL) and new partner, CBS, to promote the "Staples Coach of the Week" program, offering all accredited K-12 schools nationwide the chance to win a $5,000 Staples gift certificate.
A winning school's name will be drawn weekly during the NFL season beginning September 13, 1998 and will be announced on Sundays during THE NFL TODAY pre-game show on CBS. This is the 3rd consecutive year Staples has been a sponsor of the "Coach of the Week" program.
The winning school name will be announced in conjunction with the "Staples Coach of the Week," in which a panel of NFL representatives chooses the head coach of the team which had the best performance from that week's games. The winning school is randomly selected from a batch of entries from the winning coach's geographic area. In addition to the $5,000 Staples gift certificate, the winning school will receive a visit by that coach. The winning coach and school will be posted weekly on the Staples website (www.staples.com).
"It has been gratifying to see the positive impact this program has had on past winners and how a substantial gift of schools supplies can really make a difference to improve the school environment. Bringing the local NFL coach to the school to help celebrate offers students a terrific way to learn about teamwork and goal setting from a role model they can relate to," said Thomas G. Stemberg, chairman and CEO of Staples, Inc.
Mr. Robert Jefferson, principal of Northside High School in Memphis, Tenn., commented, "The $5,000 gift from the "Staples Coach of the Week" program bought printers and office supplies for our computer center, which is used by all of our students to prepare many of their term papers and school projects. This gift truly enhanced the learning process at my school and gave all of us, teachers, administrators and students alike, a good feeling about having won something very valuable."
