Staples Appoints Lawrence J. Morse to Lead Quill Subsidiary; Jack Miller, President and Founder of Quill, Retires

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 2000--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) has appointed Lawrence J. Morse president of its Quill subsidiary. Formerly senior vice president of operations for Quill, Morse will assume the responsibilities of Jack Miller, Quill's founder and president, who will retire Jan. 31. Morse will report to Ronald L. Sargent, president and chief operating officer of Staples, and will serve on the company's senior management team.

Jack Miller started his office supply business in 1956 in the back room of his father's chicken store. Larry Morse, a 12-year Quill employee, has held several key management positions within the company, including director of distribution, vice president of operations and senior vice president of operations. Since Staples' acquisition of Quill in May 1998, Morse has played a central role in integrating the operations of the two companies.

Morse earned a B.A. from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and a M.B.A. from Boston College.
