Staples Appoints Lawrence J. Morse to Lead Quill Subsidiary; Jack Miller, President and Founder of Quill, Retires

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 2000--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) has appointed Lawrence J. Morse president of its Quill subsidiary. Formerly senior vice president of operations for Quill, Morse will assume the responsibilities of Jack Miller, Quill's founder and president, who will retire Jan. 31. Morse will report to Ronald L. Sargent, president and chief operating officer of Staples, and will serve on the company's senior management team.

"We're very fortunate to have Larry Morse leading Quill and we know he'll make valuable contributions as a member of Staples' senior management team," said Sargent. "Also, we're deeply grateful for Jack Miller's many important contributions to our company and industry. He and his brothers have led the growth of Quill from a small phone operation into the premier direct marketer of office products in the United States." Sargent added that Miller will continue to serve as a consultant to Staples, assisting with the Quill leadership transition and several other corporate projects.

Jack Miller started his office supply business in 1956 in the back room of his father's chicken store. Joined by his two brothers, Miller led the growth of Quill over four decades as it became the largest independent direct marketer of business-to-business office supplies, through mail-order catalogs and Quillcorp.com.

Larry Morse, a 12-year Quill employee, has held several key management positions within the company, including director of distribution, vice president of operations and senior vice president of operations. Since Staples' acquisition of Quill in May 1998, Morse has played a central role in integrating the operations of the two companies.

Morse earned a B.A. from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and a M.B.A. from Boston College.
