Staples To Open 22 New Stores February 19th

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 2000--Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) today announced that it will open 22 new office superstores this Saturday, February 19. This one-day, multi-store opening is the first wave of more than 170 stores Staples expects to open in 2000 and sets a company record for the largest number of stores opened on a single day.

The 22 stores are located in: Red Bluff, Calif.; Orlando, Fla.; Toccoa, Rome and Peachtree City, Ga.; Fort Wayne, Angola, Logansport and Greensburg, Ind.; two stores in Springfield, Mo.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Rome and Victor, N.Y.; Oklahoma City and Chickasha, Okla.; The Dalles, Ore.; Narberth, Pa.; North Kingston, R.I.; Athens and Sevierville, Tenn.; and Whitewater, Wis.

With an average of 24,000 square feet per store, these stores will carry more than just general office supplies. Staples also offers business machines and computer technology, office furniture and a range of business services including payroll processing, telecommunications services, Internet services and even shipping services. Each store has a Copy Center for on-site copying, printing and binding. The Business Technology Center offers computer upgrades, software installations and more.
