Pete Howard Appointed Senior Vice President of Staples Business Delivery

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Jan 09, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) announced today the appointment of Pete Howard to senior vice president of Staples Business Delivery. Reporting to Joe Doody, president of Staples' North American Delivery business unit, Howard will direct the overall operations of Staples Business Delivery, servicing small business and home office customers through the Web site and catalogs.

"Over the past five years, Pete has helped to strategically grow Staples Business Delivery by attracting new customers and increasing retention," said Doody. "In his new role, Pete will advance our focus on doing more business with existing customers while developing new opportunities that are driven by our commitment to make it easy for small businesses and home office users to buy office products."

Howard previously served as vice president of sales and marketing for Staples Business Delivery since joining the company in 2000. Prior to joining Staples, he was vice president of marketing for Ross-Simons, a multi-channel retailer of jewelry and gifts, and held various marketing positions with Digital Equipment Corporation, The Bradford Exchange and Papermate Pen. Howard earned his BA and MBA from The University of Chicago, and lives in the Boston area with his wife and three children.

As head of Staples Business Delivery, Howard succeeds Brian Light who is appointed Staples chief information officer. Reporting to John Mahoney, Staples chief administrative officer, Light will lead the company's information systems organization and information technology investments to support Staples' infrastructure to make shopping easy for customers.
