Staples Offers Easy Tips to Help New Graduates Dress a Resume for Success

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., July 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With summer half over and the graduation parties now just a memory, recent college graduates across the country are getting serious about completing their journey from college to the real world with their first professional job search. One of the most difficult tasks in this transition is presenting a professional resume and related materials in a way that stands out from the competition. According to the Copy & Print Center experts at Staples, Inc., (Nasdaq: SPLS), the world's largest office products company, many new job seekers neglect the importance of a resume's appearance and do not take appropriate steps to create a lasting impression.

"A prospective employer's first glance at a resume can mean the difference between being considered or removed from a job candidate list," said John Burke, Senior Vice President of Business Services at Staples. "The appearance of a resume is critical and by following a few simple guidelines, anyone can create an eye-catching resume."

To help new college graduates and all other job seekers impress potential employers, Staples offers the following easy tips for creating an attractive resume:

  • Select high-quality paper, ideally bond or better and a minimum of 20lb. weight. Make it easy for employers to share your resume with others, so avoid textured papers that are difficult to photocopy.

  • Select an easy-to-read typeface like Arial or Times New Roman, no smaller than 10 points. Stay away from fancy fonts or graphics that may distract a reader.

  • Bright colored paper can make a resume difficult to read. Stick with traditional colors like white, ivory or gray.

  • If you plan to fold your resume, use a high-quality ink that won't smudge.

  • Along with the resume, offer hard copy materials of recent accomplishments. Providing a packet of materials with past writing assignments, major research reports or photos -- in a folder, binder or bound booklet with tabs -- allows employers to read and remember your academic and professional achievements.

  • Consider printing and attaching a business card with your name, phone number, e-mail and desired employment goal. A business card allows employers to easily add your contact information to their Blackberry or contacts database. Use the backside of business cards to summarize your qualifications in bulleted form.

According to Burke, job seekers who want to make their resume look its best can also get help from professional designers, without breaking the bank. "Expert design definitely makes a difference. At Staples' Copy & Print Centers, our design services experts will work with you to discuss printing and finishing options, and then help create a great-looking, professional resume, in most cases within 24 hours," he said.
